"SynNeurGe" Research Criteria: A New Biological Classification of Parkinson's Disease

In a paper published in the high profile journal Lancet Neurology, a group of Parkinson's researchers including our member Günter Höglinger, propose a biologically-based, three-part classification for Parkinson's disease (PD) ("S-N-G" system, SynNeurGe) in line with today's knowledge of the complex pathomechanisms and biological heterogeneity. On the promising path of developing disease-modifying or causal therapies, exact classification and stratification is essential to facilitate meaningful study results.

"The current research proposal is the first step in a crucial process to move Parkinson's research from a purely clinical approach to a biological approach – which further strengthens the hope for the development of disease-modifying therapies," explains Prof. Höglinger, Director of the Neurological Clinic and Polyclinic at LMU Klinikum München. However, as the expert emphasizes, these criteria are proposed exclusively for research purposes for the time being.
