Successful Array Tomography workshop in Munich

Last week, twenty researchers were invited to Munich for a 5-day hands-on workshop on array tomography, hosted by Martina Schifferer and Thomas Misgeld and funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as well as SyNergy and industry partners. The workshop included expert talks and practical sessions from both academic and commercial representatives. Its goal was to encourage more researchers to utilize array tomography (AT), as it allows for high-resolution volume analysis of tissue in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.

“The workshop was a great success, and showed the need of hands-on training and community effort to lower entry barriers for AT. While many labs and facilities are recognizing its potential for light and electron microscopic as well as multimodal inspection in cell biology, innovation, and commercial solutions are mostly driven by the connectomics field," says Martina Schifferer, SyNergy’s Nanoscale Hub Leader at DZNE.

The workshop covered the entire array tomography (AT) workflow: from sample preparation, serial ultramicrotomy, light and electron microscopy, to image analysis. Practicals included traditional AT methods like rigid support AT and automated tape collecting ultramicrotomy (ATUM), correlative and conjugate light, and electron microscopy.

Array Tomography Training and Network

The initiative aims at developing an international array tomography user community via courses and an online hub to increase skills and accessibility, and reveal the scale of biology in health and disease. The program is funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, RFA Advancing Imaging Through Collaborative Projects. You can find more information on their website: www.arraytomography.com
