Mentoring Program for female scientists: How to write a successful proposal and secure third-party funding

Empowering early-career researchers with the skills to navigate funding systems and provide foundational knowledge in writing competitive research grant applications will lay the foundations for strong and successful careers in science. Therefore, we recently hosted a hands-on proposal writing workshop for our female PhD candidates and postdocs as part of their mentoring program.

The purpose of this one-day training was to provide participants with essential knowledge and strategies for writing competitive research grant applications. Participants gained practical insights and learned how to:

    • Define project objectives and sub-goals
    • Describe the state of the art and research concept
    • Address impact, implementation planning, and budgeting
    • Understand funders’ perspectives and how reviewers assess proposals

One of the key insights was to understand the perspective of funding agencies and reviewers. Participants explored how to decode program information, choose suitable funding calls, and shape their proposals according to the evaluation criteria.

The workshop was led by Dr. Susanne Hollmann, CEO of sb-Sciencemanagement. As a highly experienced trainer, evaluator, and researcher, with deep knowledge of the funding and science management landscape, she guided our female researchers through the complexities of proposal development.
