Nanoscale Hub
The Nanoscale Hub provides technical and scientific support for projects that require ultrastructural analysis. These include scientific questions that can't be addressed by light microscopy techniques due to resolution limitations.
Typical examples within SyNergy comprise the characterization of neuronal, organellar, myelin, fibril, or blood vessel morphologies or their context within the tissue. Electron Microscopic (EM) investigations provide additional, non-hypothesis-driven insights. Currently, model organisms include mouse, zebrafish, and human biopsies. The hub offers service and training for the whole workflow of Transmission (TEM), Scanning EM (SEM), and Volume SEM. Image analysis support can only be provided to a limited extent. Depending on the project extent and complexity, either the Nanoscale Hub staff executes the work or trains scientists of the requesting SyNergy research group. SyNergy projects are prioritized but external project requests are considered depending on their general technical or scientific impact and benefit for future cluster-internal projects. The Nanoscale Hub integrates contiguous technologies, e.g., by collaborating with the Microscale Hub for correlative studies (CLEM). The Hub staff also arranges contacts with groups with EM techniques outside the Hub.
